UBC Recreation offers a wide range of fitness classes in an open and welcoming environment to all fitness levels and abilities. Classes are held in the lower level of the Hangar Fitness Centre in one of our three functional studios space. Check in at the customer service desk in the lower foyer of the gym at least 5 minutes before the schedules class time where our friendly staff can help with anything you need. More information on each of these classes is available below. Classes are available via a Group Fitness pass or by drop-in. All classes are first come, first sweat.
Staff & Faculty Yoga / Flow Yoga
Looking to set the tone of positive intention for your week? Or want to unwind after a tough week/weekend? These well-rounded yoga classes are great for beginners but also offer options for the seasoned yogi to feel challenged. Develop breathing techniques while improving your balance, flexibility, core strength, and endurance through various postures and breathing techniques. Participants will enjoy a satisfying workout while practicing a flow of postures to create internal heat while developing strength and concentration.
Lead by Myriam Webb, a somatic rest specialist, this meditation experience, affectionately called “the adult nap” due to its super battery-charging effects, as well as its calming results. In a Restorative Yoga class, poses are held in a relaxed manner for long periods of time during which practitioners are guided into meditative states. The result is a renewed and balanced self, in body, mind, and soul.
The practice of yin originated as a complimentary practice to martial arts to increase range of motion and cultivate mental focus. The practice utilizes long holds of deep stretches fully supported by props to target the connective tissue, gently but deeply open up the body, and increase mobility. There is also a strong mental component, increasing awareness of the body and mind. The practice is great for anyone looking to cultivate flexibility of the physical body and focus the mind. Suitable for beginner to advanced students.
This is a strong but balanced class with a focus on the breath and linking each breath with movement. We will primarily utilize aspects of vinyasa, power, and hatha complemented by yin, restorative and other styles to explore the capabilities of our bodies and minds and create a challenging yet well-rounded class. While this is a strong class, modifications are offered for all levels. Stay for yin after to stretch and soften!
Short and sweet yoga flow to clear the mind and warm up the heart. Expect a steady pace of movement and options to either cool down or ramp up your practice. All levels welcome, but this class is designed for practitioners who have some yoga experience. Pairs well with Restorative Yoga right after.
This Gentle Hatha class focuses on the breath and alignment. It includes meditation, breathwork, and asana (posture). All levels welcome. This class invites you to nourish yourself, by slowing down, and being gentle and compassionate with yourself!
Getting away from the plain boring crunches, this class contains a variety of core exercises that will not only give you ideas for your own workouts but also help you to strengthen your abdominals and lower back for a complete total core workout. Tummy toning, back strengthening and core burning!
Spun out Spin | Spin | Lunchtime Spin
“Get ready for the road”. Group cycling has never been better. Each class is individualized by the instructor but they’re designed for you to spin your way through a series of intervals, hill climbs and sprints that is intended to train your body for cardiovascular and endurance and keep your body guessing. Each bike is controlled individually by the operator so you’re welcome to push yourself or work within your individual limits – it’s up to you!
Barre | Body Bar(re)
Though Barre was originally a dance/ballet inspired workout, none of these classes require any dance moves for you to get a great workout. These high rep, low weight muscle toning and tightening classes – with no cardio – will tone your whole body, tighten your glutes and strengthen your core. You’re sure to be pleased with the of these (generally) low-sweat classes.
Booty Camp | Bums & Tums
Strong legs, a shaped booty and a firm core are the necessary foundations to being stronger and more fit. These classes tone those problem areas and have you looking great in no time. Whether you want to be more lean, tone your muscles or just improve your fitness levels, this is the class for you.
H.I.I.T. the Gym
This class is fit for all skill levels – you are welcome to work at your own pace and intensity level! It will be focused on a full body circuit training workout, using a variety of exercises and interval times. Each class will offer something new and fun! Come join us for a HIIT (high intensity interval training) strength circuit!
Sweat & Sculpt
This quick 30 minutes is all the time we need to get you working hard. Tabata style drills using a fun variety of equipment will make time fly and sweat drip. Great little lunch break workout!
This class works all major muscle groups and will get results you can see. Each participant will be responsible for keeping track of their own progress, resistance or weight selection and progression. The program will change periodically as to avoid plateaus. This is an addicting class because of the motivating results.
Core and Floor
Start on the floor. Do some cool poses. Then? 30 intense minutes of core and arms. This class is designed to strengthen the muscles needed for handstands, headstands, and other inversions. With a mini inversion lesson at the beginning, you’ll not only get stronger, but you’ll gain some cool party moves! All levels welcome. Modifications are provided.
Seeing stars? Muscles on fire? That’s how you know you’re doing Tabata right! Tabata is a high intensity interval training workout where you give it your all for 20 seconds, take 10 seconds of rest, and repeat… 8 times for one set. Jungle Gym Tabata takes place on the jungle gym in Studio 2 to teach you how to use this masterpiece! 30 minutes of Tabata, followed by 20 minutes of yoga flow, deep stretching and relaxation to reward yourself for the hard work! Work hard. Relax hard. That’s the dream, right? All levels welcome. Modifications are provided.
